Make sure my goals match up with God’s Word!
Isaiah 55:8-9, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
This requires some forethought and preparation.
This requires a diligent study of the Word of God.
This often requires the impute of a mature believer.
Resolutions made on a whim or flippantly are seldom productive.
Saturate my goals with submissive prayer!
James 1:5, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." What God desires to see happen in my life this year and what I desire, may be two different things.
Ask God to lay on my heart what my goals should be.
Psalm 27:11, “Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path...”
Psalm 86:11, “Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.”
Knowing that this goal is God’s will for my life gives me stronger incentive to accomplish it.
Make sure my goals are realistic and practical!
Psalm 27:4, “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.”
I believe it is best to keep my number of resolutions to a minimum (1-3, with 3 being the max.)
This enables me to focus my energies rather than spread thin across many goals.
Accomplishing 1 or 2 small goals is much more productive than falling short of several sensational goals!
Be SPECIFIC with my goals.
General, ambiguous goals are seldom accomplished (“lose weight, witness more, glorify God,” etc.) Be specific about what I want to change.
Lay out a plan of action to carry out these goals.
Write down what you want to see accomplished.
Keep my goals before me.
God never acts without plans and purposes!
Isaiah 55:8-9, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
Continually monitor my progress.
Remember that change is a process.
Start with small steps and increase as you accomplish initial steps.
For instance: read just a few verses a day to begin with or be a silent partner to begin soul winning. Write my resolutions down and review regularly
Make myself accountable to a faithful & reliable friend.
Hebrews 3:13, “But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”
Hebrews 10:25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
The body of Christ is a “spiritual support system!”
Perhaps why the Lord sent out the disciples our two - by- two.
Don’t quit!
Proverbs 24:16, “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.”
1 Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
